About the artist: Josu Maroto Peñagaricano

 

   -Birthplace: Urretxu (1975)

   -Education: Bachelor of Architecture, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) (2000).

 

   -Profile: Draftsman, urban sketcher, illustrator, portraitist, caricaturist, watercolorist, painter, life painter...

   -Career: He has exhibited individually and collectively. He teaches international workshops (Lisbon, Málaga, Barcelona, etc.) and coordinates monthly workshops at the Urretxu Cultural Center. He has been a contributor to the weekly newspaper Goiberri for over 10 years and has been published in various publications, book covers, and album covers.

   -Awards: Finalist in the 1st ABC Museum Press Illustration Competition in the caricature category and 3rd prize in traditional technique at Eurocon 2013 (Vienna).

   -Live Painting: He has collaborated, painting live, in music and poetry recitals with musicians such as Gorka Hermosa, Iñaki Salvador, Kalakan, Oreka TX, Pello Ramirez, Eñaut Elorrieta, Mikel Urdangarín, and Ertzak, among others.

   -Ongoing Training: He has studied under masters such as Alvaro Castagnet, Eudes Correia, Alejandro Casanova, Jorge Copruna, and Mendo.

 

 

Course Description

 

This workshop focuses on watercolor portraiture from photographic models.

 

Course Content

 

   -The Foundations of Drawing: Analysis of facial anatomy, structure, and the right-brain approach to drawing.

   -Watercolor Technique: Basic concepts and study of a specific palette for flesh tones.

   -References: Analysis of internationally renowned artists.

 

Workshop Structure

   -Introduction: An overview of the author's artistic journey and the concept of "drawing, portraiture, and watercolor. Drawing as meditation."

   -Initial Practice: A brief exercise in drawing a face from a photographic model.

   -Demonstration: Josu will demonstrate in three steps: Drawing – Initial Shade – Finishing Touches.

   -Execution: Students will carry out the exercise step by step, following the instructor's demonstration.

   -Raffle: At the end, the artwork created by the instructor will be raffled off among the attendees.

 

List of Necessary Materials

It is recommended to bring your own materials, emphasizing the quality of the paper and brushes.

 

Watercolor - Extended Palette (Recommended Palette)

 

   -Essential Basics (*): Payne's Gray, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Carmine, Cadmium Permanent Red, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Lemon, Cobalt Blue.

   -Remaining palette: Sepia, Perylene Violet, Transparent Yellow, Light Cobalt Turquoise, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue, Winsor Green (blue hue), and Sap Green.

Support and Brushes

   -Paper: 300gsm fine grain, approx. 30x40cm (multiple sheets).

   -Brushes: Small gray brush, round and flat brushes (natural or synthetic hair) in various sizes.

Other Supplies

   -Graphite pencil and/or 0.5mm mechanical pencil (with blue lead).

   -Masking tape and support board.

   -Water container and paper towels.

   -Hair dryer (available to share).
